Like a cat in heat for breakfast

Completion

The comic is done. Now I just need to make a test print tomorrow. I’ll have a few people read it and make any necessary changes. Then, it’s off to Tokyopop. So far, I think this could be the best comic I’ve made yet. We’ll see if others agree.

Happy Sleep Dep

I am so close to finishing the comic for the contest. There is only an hour or two worth of work to complete it, but I need to get to bed. I have to leave for work in 7 hours and tomorrow (ahem: today) is a long day. I’ll finish it tonight.

I finished reading the Robert Rodriguez book. I am so glad I bought it. It refueled my enthusiasm for making movies and inspired me in a way nothing else has in a long time. The last thing to affect me in this sort of creative fashion was when I saw Ed Wood for the first time eight years ago. I must start making movies again.

Production Porridge

Today was a very productive day off. I awoke at 1:00pm, but still managed to accomplish a number of things. In my defense, I was up until 4:00am working on my comic for the contest. The comic is very near completion and I am ahead of schedule. Another sample is posted below. Much of the text is probably difficult to read at this size. Do not fret, it will all be readable when I am done and it becomes available to the public.

Mike and I also spent a few hours plotting a new episode for the Moodoo television series. Things are coming along well in the puppet world.

Let’s hope this continues in all venues.

Epiphany aint my sista

I am sure some of you have heard of the Louisiana tradition of eating boiled crawfish. The season falls during the winter and Louisiana folk frequently get together to boil crawfish in a large vat, pour it across newspaper, and devour it while imbibing alcohol-primarily beer. Having moved to Los Angeles, I have missed out on this annual tradition. Luckily for the last 2 years, the fantastic Matt and Gina have thrown an annual crawfish boil in Camarillo. Today was the day. Great again, like last year. You never realize how you may appreciate components of your homeland until you leave it.

I began reading Robert Rodriguez’s Rebel Without a Crew today. It is a fantastic, dare I say inspiring book for aspiring filmmakers. It is great to read these sorts of books and see how much I have in common with this highly successful individual. It is akin to the life altering experience I had watching Ed Wood eight years ago. It reminds me that I was on the right track years ago until I let myself steer away into self doubt. Hopefully, this book is one of the many factors catapulting me out of the slump I have been in for over three years.

I spoke with my best friend, Bryan for a long time over the phone tonight. He turns 28 next week. Reading that book, having reevaluated my life for the last few months, and the gravity of our expedient aging led to much needed conversation. Hopefully, we and all my friends will take a look at our lives, decide what we want to do with them, and do our best to see it through immediately. The time for procrastination has ended.

Last night, I inked the last (16th) page of my submission for the Manga contest. Now, scanning, typesetting, toning, and printing only remain.

Thus he Returneth…

San Diego & Tijuana
My girlfriend treated me to a weekend in San Diego. This included visits to the Zoo, Sea World, and Tijuana. We stayed in the lovely Bahia Inn in Mission Bay where swarms of birds invaded our porch to quarrel over remnants of our breakfast and proceeded to leave a minefield of green bird feces. It was fun.

Saturday afternoon we took a trip across the “biggest port of entry” into Tijuana Mexico. The streets were composed primarily of the following: an eaterie, a strip club, a miserable zebra-striped pony for photo ops, a pharmacy, a night club, and a gift shop. Repeat sequence to near infinity adding a stray intersection every few sequences. It was a hopping place. We visited two strip clubs. One of which was terrible. The second, on the other hand, was great except for two things: a terribly drunk obnoxious American that would not stop yapping even for a breath and the guy who sold us our drinks and tried to sneak off with the change. The girls made up for both of these factors. They were sexy and ballsy. One pulled me on stage, stripped me to nothing and tore my underwear to shreds. Another leaped upon my girlfriend’s lap and rubbed her naked body across hers while lifting my girlfriend’s shirt. This was a fun place.

Sea World is great. Lots of impressive animal performances and impressive habitats with fascinating sea creatures. Meeting and petting the dolphins was certainly one of the day’s high points. I was also quite fond of the penguins and arctic birds. Often throughout the day, I wished I could dive into these habitats and swim with the whales, dolphins, birds, etc.

The San Diego Zoo is also a nice place, although I always have mixed opinions about the concept of zoos, I enjoyed this one. The Hippo habitat was especially impressive. I have never found Hippo exhibits very interesting until this one. Sectioned glass allows you to peer into a roughly 6 feet deep pool where you can watch the hippos run across the pool bottom and interact. The ape habitats and aviaries are also very nice. They make you feel as if you are walking through a jungle with a conveniently paved sidewalk. These were just a few of many highlights of a very good weekend.
